One of our children's ministries at GBC, Awana is an acronym for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, derived from 2 Timothy 2:15, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth".

Awana exists to reach children and youth with the Gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him. Awana uses a blend of: (1) Council Time - a worship experience and presentation of the Bible appropriate to the needs of children and youth: (2) Handbook Time - devoted to scripture memory and understanding with as much one on one instruction and supervision as possible: (3) Game Time - a highly charged and fast moving time of recreation and competition, supervised diligently and capably by our trained staff.

Awana is underway for the 2011-2012 year, but you can still join us!  Drop by the church lobby any Wednesday evening between 6:15 - 6:30, and the Awana Secretary will be happy to assist.

Schedule

Awana clubs meet at GBC each Wednesday night at 6:30 PM, roughly following the school year with a break in the summer.

Awana Club Meetings:

Opening Ceremony

The purpose of the Opening Ceremony is to bring clubbers together at the beginning of the evening. It consists of prayer, American and Awana flag pledges, and general announcements.

Game Time

Game Time provides structured fun that interests kids, but also teaches them the value of teamwork and acceptance.

Handbook Time

Handbook Time consists of scripture memorization, explanation, and learning. Leaders provide one-on-one time with the clubbers answering their questions and listening.

Council Time

Council time consists of praise and singing along with a Bible-themed message to the clubbers.

The Awana Store and Earning Shares

Each Awana clubber has the opportunity to earn what we call “shares”. Shares are simply Awana money to be spent in the Awana Store.  Shares can be earned by saying memory verses (sections), coming to Club on time and in uniform, bringing visitors, bring their Bible to club, etc.

The Awana Store houses many items that kids love from small novelty toys to large items the clubbers can save for. Store nights occur twice per year - once around Christmas-time and once at the end of the club year.

We do accept donations of new toys and items that might persuade kids to earn and learn.

Theme Nights

Every year we hold theme nights to encourage participation among the leaders and clubbers of our Awana Club – also because theme nights are a lot of fun!

Information will be sent home prior to all theme nights and special events to ensure all clubbers and their parents are aware of current happenings.  You can also check the Awana calendar online.

Uniforms

An important part of Awana is to establish unity and discipline within children (and leaders). Awana uses uniforms to assist in this effort. Uniforms are also a neat place to display awards.

Uniforms are available to all clubbers after completing their entrance booklets. Order forms will be sent home to parents upon doing so.

Dues

Dues are requested, but not required for Awana Clubbers. These donations help defray the cost of club activities, including prizes and Awana materials.  Donations are due in September and January, and are $15 per semester per child (maximum of $45 per family).

Drop-off and Pick-up

Please drop off your children no earlier than 6:15 PM.

Please return to pick up your children at 8:00 PM. Cubbies, Sparks and T&T clubbers must be picked up by a parent or pre-arranged guardian to avoid any confusion and safety risks.
